Although this depends if I am seeing you for low back pain and you are having a hard time tolerating sitting, the answer may be different. However, see below for some general guidelines.

Get up from your desk 1x/hour

Typically getting up once an hour will keep any potential general low back pain from sitting away, and change the weight distribution through your spine. This means changing your position at least once an hour. You do not have to get up and go for a walk, or even transition to a standing desk. Just change your position by standing, maybe re-adjusting how you are sitting in your chair etc (See next Monday’s blog post to stay up to date on posture).

How Can I Actually Get Up From My Desk 1x/hour?

  • I encourage clients to have a large bottle or glass of water always at their desk as a visual cue to drink water, this will make you have to use the bathroom and get up more frequently.
  • If you take phone calls that you do not need to be at your computer for, plan to take your calls while standing or walking around.
  • Set alarms on your phone or watch to notify you to get up (and then actually do it).
