Postpartum physical therapy is often viewed as optional, something to consider only if pain or obvious problems arise. As a physical therapist, I see it very differently. Postpartum physical therapy is a critical part of recovery, not just rehab for when something feels “wrong.”
Pregnancy and birth place significant demands on the body. Core muscles are stretched, the pelvic floor works overtime, posture shifts, and joints adapt to months of change. Even in uncomplicated deliveries, the body needs support to restore strength, coordination, and confidence. Postpartum physical therapy helps bridge the gap between medical clearance and truly returning to daily life and exercise.
One of the biggest benefits of postpartum physical therapy is education. Many people are unsure what’s normal postpartum and what deserves attention. Symptoms like pain, leakage, heaviness, or feeling disconnected from your core are common—but they’re not something you have to live with. Physical therapy helps identify the root cause of these symptoms and provides a plan to address them early.
Postpartum physical therapy also focuses on function. Caring for a baby involves repetitive lifting, carrying, feeding, and long periods in sustained positions. Without proper support and strength, these demands can lead to pain or injury. Targeted exercises and movement strategies help the body tolerate these tasks more comfortably.
Importantly, postpartum physical therapy isn’t just for the early weeks after birth. It’s valuable months or even years later, especially for those returning to higher-impact exercise or managing ongoing symptoms.
Recovery doesn’t end at six weeks. Postpartum physical therapy provides guidance, reassurance, and a structured path forward—so movement feels strong, supported, and sustainable as you step into this new phase of life.
