Pregnancy Joint Pain and Hypermobility
Joint pain during pregnancy is common, but for people with hypermobility, it can be more intense and persistent. Hips, pelvis, low back, shoulders, and even hands may become painful as the body adapts to pregnancy-related changes. This is where physical therapy can be incredibly helpful.
Hypermobility affects how joints move and how the nervous system perceives stability. During pregnancy, increased joint laxity and changes in posture can overload areas that already struggle with control. Pain often develops not from injury, but from repeated micro-stress and muscle overwork.
Physical therapy focuses on restoring balance between mobility and stability. Rather than encouraging more flexibility, treatment emphasizes joint control, strength, and proprioception. This helps muscles respond appropriately to movement and reduces unnecessary strain.
A physical therapist can also help modify daily activities, sleep positions, and exercise routines to better support hypermobile joints during pregnancy. Small adjustments often make a big difference in symptom management.
Importantly, physical therapy is individualized. Hypermobility looks different in every body, and pregnancy adds another layer of complexity. Having guidance that adapts as your body changes can reduce pain and increase confidence.
Pregnancy joint pain isn’t something you need to accept as inevitable. With the right physical therapy approach, many hypermobile individuals feel stronger, more supported, and better prepared for both birth and postpartum recovery.
