When people think of hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), they usually picture bendy joints, dislocations, or frequent injuries. But the side effects often run much deeper, and can be frustrating if you’re not expecting them.

Hidden Side Effects of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder:

  • Delayed recovery from exercise – Muscles and connective tissues often take longer to heal due to micro-instability.
  • Gastrointestinal issues – The same connective tissue differences that affect joints can also affect the gut leading to GI issues.
  • Autonomic dysfunction – Dizziness, temperature regulation challenges, or fatigue linked to dysautonomia are common in this population.
  • Chronic pain – Not only from tissue strain but also from how the nervous system processes signals.
  • Proprioceptive challenges – A reduced “sense of where your body is in space,” leading to bruises or injuries.

The key takeaway: HSD isn’t just about being “too flexible.” It’s a multi system condition that requires a whole-body management strategy, one that integrates physical therapy, pacing, nutrition, and nervous system support.
