As a physical therapist who works extensively with hypermobile and prenatal clients, I see firsthand how pregnancy can amplify the unique challenges that come with increased joint mobility. If you’re hypermobile, you already know your joints move a little too well. During pregnancy, rising levels of relaxin and progesterone, hormones that naturally increase ligament laxity, can make those joints even more unstable. The result? More aches, more fatigue, and sometimes a feeling that your body isn’t quite “holding together” the way it used to.
But the good news is that with the right support, pregnancy can be much more comfortable. I always tell my hypermobile clients that strength is their superpower during this season. As your ligaments loosen, your muscles become your most reliable source of stability. Targeted strengthening for the hips, core, and pelvic floor can make a massive difference in pain, posture, and day-to-day function.
Another key factor is pacing your movement. Many hypermobile people fall into the “all-or-nothing” trap, doing too much on the good days and crashing on the bad ones. Pregnancy magnifies this cycle. Learning how to dose your activity, take breaks before fatigue hits, and modify high-demand tasks can help you maintain consistency without flare-ups.
Finally, don’t ignore symptoms that disrupt your daily life, pelvic girdle pain, SI pain, pubic symphysis pain, or persistent instability. These are all treatable with the right approach, and early intervention is always better than waiting.
Hypermobility doesn’t have to make pregnancy harder. With individualized strengthening, strategic movement, and a therapist who understands your body, you can feel stronger, more supported, and more in control during every trimester.
If you’re pregnant and hypermobile, you’re not alone, and you can feel better. Let’s support your body through this journey.
