One of the most confusing experiences for people with hypermobility is feeling “tight” despite having a greater normal range of motion. How can you be both loose and stiff? Can You Be Both Hypermobile and Stiff?

When the body senses joint instability, it tightens certain muscles to create dynamic stability from the muscles. This is driven by the nervous system’s attempt to protect joints that lack support. It’s not true muscle stiffness; it’s our perception from our nervous system.

Stretching may temporarily relieve this sensation, but can make it worse long-term. Why? Because it pulls on muscles already working hard to stabilize. Instead, focus on:

  • Stability drills
  • Core and hip strengthening
  • Breathwork and nervous system regulation

The goal is not to stretch more; it’s to feel safe in your body again. A physical therapist familiar with hypermobility can help you reset these protective patterns and move with greater ease.

Building control through strength, learning to engage the right muscles at the right time, and calming the nervous system all help unwind the tension loop. Yoga, Pilates, and breathwork can be helpful, but only when layered on top of solid strength training.
